When we open windows and doors to cool down our homes, we often forget the danger this poses to them. Falls from balconies or windows have become a common accident and often result in emergency vet visits\u2014sometimes with very serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to falls, <strong>the number of lost cats also increases during this time of year<\/strong>. A moment of carelessness, an open door, or an unprotected window can be enough for a cat to escape. Whether driven by curiosity, startled by a noise, or\u2014especially in the case of unneutered cats\u2014motivated by mating instincts, many cats become disoriented and can\u2019t find their way back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though cats have good balance and orientation, this doesn\u2019t make them immune to accidents or getting lost. A slip, a distraction, or a sudden impulse can lead to a fall\u2014or a disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Which cats are most at risk?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most likely to experience these kinds of incidents are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kittens or young cats<\/strong>, due to their curiosity and high energy levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unneutered cats during mating season<\/strong>, who may act impulsively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Older cats<\/strong>, who may have lost agility and reflexes over time.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can you protect your cat during the summer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install safety nets or enclosures<\/strong> on windows, balconies, and terraces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid leaving your cat unsupervised<\/strong> in risky areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Provide toys and mental stimulation<\/strong> indoors to keep them entertained and away from danger.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make sure your cat is microchipped and\/or wears an ID tag<\/strong>, in case they manage to escape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Always check doors and windows<\/strong> before opening them.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We often hear people say, <em>\u201cI was going to get them microchipped, but I didn\u2019t get around to it.\u201d<\/em> This mindset needs to change. Microchipping is neither expensive nor complicated, and it\u2019s a basic act of responsibility toward the animal in your care.
