While they might seem like a minor inconvenience at first glance, their real danger lies in their ability to transmit infectious diseases. Through their bite, they can introduce bacteria, viruses, and protozoa that may cause serious health issues if not detected and treated in time.
Among the most common tick-borne diseases in dogs are ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis, caused by bacteria from the Ehrlichia and Anaplasma, respectively. Once introduced into the dog’s body through a tick bite, these bacteria primarily affect red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. As obligate intracellular bacteria, they require these cells to survive and multiply. In its effort to eliminate the infection, the dog’s immune system may end up attacking and destroying its own blood cells, often resulting in anaemia. Therefore, affected dogs may show signs such as weakness, pale gums, difficulty exercising, weight loss, lethargy, among others.

Chocolate’s Case

This was the case of Chocolate, a dog who arrived at our shelter showing clear signs of tick infestation. At first, he seemed fine, but over the following days, he started losing weight, became increasingly weak and lethargic, stopped eating, and developed a fever. As part of our routine protocol, we performed a rapid test to detect blood parasites, which came back negative at that time. However, due to the severity of his condition and blood test results showing severe anaemia, we decided to repeat the test a few days later. This time, the result came back positive for both Ehrlichia and Anaplasma.
Why was the first test negative? Because there likely weren’t enough bacteria in his bloodstream at the time for the test to detect — something that can happen during the early stages of infection.
With the diagnosis confirmed, we began treatment with doxycycline, an antibiotic administered for a 4-week period. However, because the treatment doesn’t take effect immediately and Chocolate was suffering from very severe anaemia, a blood transfusion was needed to support his recovery.
Thanks to the transfusion and appropriate treatment, Chocolate began to improve. He regained his appetite, became more alert, and his daily blood tests showed a favorable evolution: his haematocrit — the value used to assess anaemia — was increasing day by day. By the end of his treatment, Chocolate was symptom-free, full of energy, and had completely recovered from the anaemia.

How Can These Diseases Be Prevented?

Like many other illnesses, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are transmitted through tick bites. Therefore, the best way to prevent them is through proper tick control. This is achieved by maintaining a regular external parasite prevention routine, tailored to the needs of the individual dog and the geographic area in which they live. In our region, year-round protection is recommended, with special emphasis during warmer months. Various types of external dewormers are available on the market, such as chewable tablets and spot-on treatments.
Routine veterinary check-ups are also highly important. Early diagnosis makes a significant difference, allowing to startreatment and helping prevent serious complications.

Ivanna Vons
Vet in Lliga per la protecció d’animals i plantes de Barcelona

EHRLICHIA &
